Abstract:
Abstract: Levonogestrol (LNG) intrauterine system continuously releases low doses of gestagen and provides local action on the uterus only. It affects endometrium and cervical glands only, providing therapeutic and contraceptive effect. Because gestagen is released local only, the concentration of hormons is 1000x higher (1000 ng/mL) in the endometrium, comparing with serum concentration. Consequently, the endometrium is strongly suppressed and insensitive to estrogens. LNG decreases effect of insuline like growth factor 1 (IFG1). Indicatons for LNG intrauterine system are: menorrhagia, metrorrhagia, dysfunctional bleeding, dysmenorrhea, secondary anemia due to prolonged bleeding, thrombocytopenia, adenomyosis and myoms to 40 mm. The use of this hormonal agent is also justified as a contraceptive, where its activity is realized by increased viscosity of the cervical mucus and inhibition of sperms mobility and endometrial growth.
