Za minimiziranje sile trenja između ortodontske žice i bravice su korištene nanočestice kao komponenta suhih lubrikanata koje imaju potencijal da povećaju željeno kretanje zuba i time skrati vrijeme potrebno za terapiju. Nanočestice imaju veći omjer površine i volumena (po jedinici mase) u poređenju sa česticama koje nisu na nano skali, usljed čega stupaju u prisniji kotakt sa membranom bakterija obezbjeđujući veću površinu za antimikrobnu aktivnost čime se postiže kontrola oralnog biofilma tokom ortodontskog tretmana. Zbog povećanog interesa za proizvodnju estetskih ortodontskih žica u boji zuba estetski polimeri (shape memory polymer-SMP) postaje područje potencijalnog istraživanja kao materijal koji ima sposobnost pamćenja makroskopskih ili ravnotežnih oblika,koji se poslije manipulacije i deformacije, pod određenim stimulusima, kao što su termalni, električni ili uslovi okruženja vraćaju u svoj izvorni oblik. Ključne riječi: nanotehnologija, nanomaterijali, ortodontske žice APPLICATION OF NANOTECHNOLOGY AND NANOMATERIALS IN IMPROVING CHARACTERISTICS OF ORTHODONTIC WIRES Abstract: Current trends in application of nanotechnology and nanomaterials in the field of nanomodification of the surface of orthodontic wires and brackets are focused in three directions: minimizing the frictional force between the orthodontic wire and brackets, controlling the oral biofilm during orthodontic therapy, and the production of aesthetic orthodontic wires in tooth colour. To minimize friction force between orthodontic wire and brackets, nanoparticles have been used as a component of dry lubricants that have the potential to increase desired movement of teeth and thereby shorten the time required for treatment. The nanoparticles have a higher surface and volume ratio (per unit weight) compared to particles that are not on a nano scale, resulting in a more intimate contact with bacterial membrane providing a larger surface for antimicrobial activity, thus achieving control of oral biofilm during orthodontic treatment. Due to increased interest in production of aesthetic orthodontic wires in tooth colour, shape memory polymer-SMP becomes the area of potential research as a material that has the ability to remember macroscopic or equilibrium forms, which is after manipulation and deformation, or temporary form under certain stimuli, as thermal, electrical or ambient conditions return to their original form.
